Young Irish people choosing drugs over drink

Mayo coroner Patrick O'Connor has linked the mental-health crisis among Irish youth with rising drug use, particularly in rural areas. Due to the importance of social media and public appearance young people who want to avoid the calories and sugars in alcohol are now turning to drugs. They are often uninformed about the very serious consequences of dabbling in mind-altering drugs, and the consequential changes to brain chemistry and their personalities.

"Education, and making people aware of the significant health risks of dabbling in drugs and alcohol, need to be a priority now and in the future,” the coroner said.
